CAL RIPKEN, JR.
Baseball’s All-Time “Iron Man” and Hall of Famer

Retiring from baseball in 2001 after 21 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, Cal Ripken’s name appears
in the record books repeatedly. One of only eight players in history to achieve 400 home runs and
3,000 hits, he is best known for playing 2,632 consecutive games, breaking Lou Gehrig's record of
2,130. Although he finished his career at third base, he is credited with redefining the position of
shortstop. He was the American League Rookie of the Year in 1982, a two-time American League
MVP, and a two-time Gold Glove Award recipient. He played in 19 All-Star Games, and was twice
named All-Star MVP. In 2007, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame with the third highest
percentage of votes in history.
Ripken's name has become synonymous with strength, character, endurance, and integrity. His
philosophy of working hard, playing with passion, and enjoying the game has had a tremendous impact
on the sport, and on fans everywhere. In 1999, Babe Ruth League, Inc. changed the name of its largest
division (5-12 year-olds) from Bambino to Cal Ripken Baseball. Presently, over 700,000 youths play
Cal Ripken Baseball worldwide.
He has written or collaborated on several books, including Play Baseball the Ripken Way, Parenting
Young Athletes the Ripken Way: Ensuring the Best Experience for Your Kids in Any Sport , and
Get in the Game: 8 Elements of Perseverance That Make the Difference
