View Full Version : AMSoil Series 2000 0w-30
I purchased a case from an independent dealer in Houston today and had my 1st oil change. This independent dealer has a 2003 Mach 1 and swears that after he changed from AMSoil 5w-30 to the Series 2000 0w-30 I put in today, he started seeing a 3mpg increase. I've reaserched this way more than most anybody would, so I feel like this product is superior and I am looking forward to averageing out my first tank since the change. I filled up right before and calculated 28.87 mpg. A 12 quart case of this shit with tax just ran me $136.00, so if I'm not seeing over 30 mpg by my second tank, then I'm gonna feel like a douch bag and concede to Matticus who told me "oil is oil, just pick one and stick with it" Oh, we shall see Matticus, we shall see.
Make sure to post your impressions. Hell if there is a 3mpg increase I will have to get some!
I put 342 miles before filling up this time and calculated my mpg to be 31.3. I drive the same way pretty much every fill up. I'm easy on the throttle, don't go much faster than 70 on the hwy, and use the power every once in a while when I want to. I'm going to average out my next three tanks to get the most accurate avg to see if this oil is whats really contributing to the mileage increase. Amsoil series 2000 ow-30 claims that it was designed to be a lightweight oil with superior wear protection and friction reducing additives. It also claims to control the formation of acid in the oil so that you can supposably drive 25k miles between changes. I'm NOT doing that, and will change my oil when the computer tells me to. I'll let you know after I get an avg of three tanks what my true mileage is now. Btw, I calculated my last three tanks before the change to be 29.2 mpg

im thinking of getting this too..i want the best protection for my motor..paying a bit more is a small thing..
BMW 5W30 Syn Oil
Cruising on the Palmetto at highway speeds: 220-230 degrees
Stuck on the Palmetto for around 30 mins on and off traffic: 250+ degrees
Motul 5W40 Syn Oil
Cruising on the Palmetto at highway speeds: 200-215 degrees
Stuck on the Palmetto for around 30 mins on and off traffic: 230-240 degrees
Amsoil 0W30 Syn Oil
Cruising on the Palmetto at highway speeds: 170-180 degrees
Stuck on the Palmetto for around 30 mins on and off traffic: 180-200 degrees
These oils were tested on my 95 M3. Running all on 18-19psi. The
BMW syn oil felt heavy (couldn't rev as fast) compared to the Motul or the Amsoil Oil.
sounds good to me! +the increased mileage would help too...i dunno about the whole 25,000 mile thing since i cant use their spin on type oil filter...how long would a cartridge filter last?
I have no idea how long the filter would last. Im going to change my oil (and filter) as recomended by the car's computer. If anyone's interested, I ran my car over the weekend fairly hard on a 45 minute trip north to The Woodlands and back to Pearland. I didn't redline but maybe once, and did more than a few hard pulls onto the hiway and then some hard 4th gear pulls to near 7k. I figured my mpg would suck because of the aggressive driving. I filled up today and got 29.6 mpg. I'm not saying its the oil, but whatever it is, I'm impressed. I use the same Shell 93 octane and fill up at the same Shell station using the same pump so that their are no discrepencies.
thats awesome man. I just started using shell gas and noticed about a 3 or so mpg increase.

If your gonna run Amsoil on an NA engine then at least run it for 10,000 miles with a new filter every 5k. Trust me that oil is not hurt at 10k. With the price of it, at least get your moneys worth.

how do u change the filter without taking out the oil O_o.. mine car is turbo or do u drain the oil and put it back in

You don't have to drain the oil to replace the filter. Depending on filter size you do have to add some oil to replace what was in the filter. In most cases a half to one quart is all.

FWIW I'm not sure were you guys are buying your Amsoil but I believe Gary Watson racing on College st. stocks some.

lol i honestly never knew that xD... i plan on getting it from the online store
When I had my 99 si, I was told I could go 10k miles between oil changes using royal purple. I would change every 10k miles, and do a filter and top off at 5k. After running this schedule pretty much from my first oil change to rp at 3k miles and on up till I had a valve adjustment performed at 65k miles (2 1/2 yrs). The Honda tech removed the valve cover and made me come out to see the insides of my engine. It was tarnished and a really bright copper color with sludge hanging onto the head. It looked shitty. I was 22 at this time, and there was no internet like today, so my auto knowledge back then was limited. I don't trust any oil past 5k no matter what now. David, I know you are a mechanic and know more than me with regards to engines, but I will just pay the $11.00 a quart cost for peace of mind and change when my car tells me too.

o.o this came off their website
i heard royal purple shears off relatively fast but ive never heard anything bad from amsoil

I would rather order it online. His prices are a little high. But, if you need it "right now" . . . .
3 fill ups, not driven overly agressive, and a combined avg of 30.7 mpg. My conclusion as of 1200 miles since oil change. This oil did not help me acheive any higher fuel economy. It might be a "superior" product to conventional oils, but i don't see how I could justify it being $11 a quart. Now, I'm just going to say fuck it, and start driving the piss out the car. Might as well have fun right?

so i might as well go with the 5-30
Are you wanting to go with amsoil 5w-30, or another synthetic brand? One factor I didn't include in my average was that I was and have been driving my car more agressively. I always felt that with the k20's, revving your car from 4-5k rpms frequently, took more fuel than revving it above 6k. Here lately jsut cruising around, I am always riding in 3rd around 3k and giving quick burst to near 5k. Driving aggressively like that and still returning good mpg could be because of the series 2000, or not. Its too hard to be absolutely consistent with each tank between three fillups. Maybe I'll try again after my next oil change with the same product and set parameters in my driving so that there aren't as many deviations.

5-30w amsoil lol ...orange is the shit though 3.99 for supreme cheapest yet...quite sad when ur gladd to see 4$ gas
Whose the other guy on this site with an si? I want to talk with him about his fuel economy. I've been getting harder and harder on the si, yet still averageing 29-30 mpg. Maybe this is normal, but most people on 8th gen civic who actually drive their si's claim alot lower mpg. Maybe there actually is something to this oil?

my buddy has an si but his is barely broken in so prolly getting horrible mileage
I had my second oil change today with the 0w-30 amsoil, and I went ahead and had them drain and refill the trannycase too. I'm at 7700 miles, and I have not once in countless miles gotten below 28 mpg. I could tell that my tranny shifted smoother ( it was way more fluid, like it just glided into the gears with just the right amt of click). Felt better than ever for some reason. It's never been a problem for me, even 3rd gear, which alot of people on 8th gen civic claim to have had or have major problems with. This car is great, I love it, but the plastic on the interior sucks hairy monkey balls. Scratches like a bitch!! For whatever reason, the dbw has settled down alot too. I don't think that I've just gotten used it either, I think it's actually learned my driving style and adjusted. It rev matches much smoother and doesn't hesitate anymore when I give it gas to downshift / rev-match. I used to gas it between downshifts and it would hesitate sometimes, and over-rev others. Very fucking frustrating when trying to drive hard!! It doesn't do that anymore at all, and just acts like I want it too now.

I use oil meant for diesel engines in my hondas. It has some cool stuff that isn't included in the same quantities in oil meant for gasoline engines.

I've never heard that before. I didn't even know they made diesel oil in a Honda weight. What's it do that's better?

the other guy with the si is Brian his is a white 4dr, and yes he gets just as good as you if not a little better. i love the performance and room of his car just not crazy about the dash quality.
That's awesome. I didn't think I was alone on this, but kinda hoped it was a little bit of the $11 a quart oil I use. lol

I gotta 07' Si with 35K miles and 28-34MPG is average for me too, depending on how I drive. I drive mainly highway to work and back everyday, with a lil stop N' go action cutting through Bridge City, and I get on it quite a bit. I usually just shift between 3K-4500K RPMS, depending on traffic and whatnot. I just use the Mobil1 Extended Performance synthetic oil in mine with an Honda OEM oil filter, change it about every 4K-5K miles, dont pay much attention to the oil life thing because I think it's a lying devil.lol Comming back from Oklahoma City after the Gustav evacuation, I averaged 40.3MPG, 431 miles on 10.6 gallons. I had to check it 3 times to make sure I did it right! I'm thinking its mainly because it was all highway and traffic was only doing between 50-60MPH. Is your Si all stock?
