Going to a lot today that has both and does in house financing with $1,500 down.
Who would pick what, and why?
Why wouldn't you pick the other?
Please, keep the responses somewhat professional, and avoid the "because (x) suck!!!"

the only good reason you can find to get an SVT Focus is that the resale value should be next to nothing, so you could find a really cheap car.
aside from price, I would go with the RSX.
It will hold it's value better than the POS Focus.
You can always find parts for it since Honda puts a k series motor in damned near everything.
You can easily make changes to the ignition and fuel maps by running K-Pro, which will be cheaper than running a standalone on a Focus.
Aftermarket support will be more plentiful, which in turn means more competition to get your business will have cheaper prices.
And finally, you will have a much higher quality vehicle with an RSX. The interior is much nicer. And you will also have a much more dependable car with the RSX than you will with a Focus.
so basically, get a Focus only if you find one for 1400 bucks. Otherwise, get an RSX.

Both have pros and cons. The SVT Focus is slightly quicker, better handling car from the Factory. On the other hand, the aftermarket support is not as deep. The RSX is quick and responds very well to modification. There is also a plethora of aftermarket parts for that platform. I have driven both of these cars. I do still have a preference to the Acura though(i have the same motor in my Civic).

So what generates the hp/tq difference between the base model and the S?

to make a long story short, the head is set up differently so that the type S can make more power. i'm not positive but the static compression of the Type S may also be higher.

rsx. simply for the fact i don't like domestic compacts. again, honda holds higher resale and parts are more available. personally if i see a focus run 11s at the end of the day its still a focus.

As Mike said the compression is higher in the type s. The type s has a 6spd. I believe the suspension on the type s is more aggresive. The type s has REAL vtakkkkkk. And a much stronger bottom end. Its not at all uncommon to see a stock type s bottom end that has been putting down 400whp+ for a couple of years.
If its a base rsx, I would just drive it. There is no reason to try and make it fast unless you feel like doing a swap. Whether its just a head swap or a complete change over you are going to need to fuck off under the hood to see any real gains. On top of all that you would need to spend around 800 on a tuneable computer.

That's how i feel with 99% or 4-banger cars though. fwd/rwd/awd
Just got back from the lot. Don't think i'll be going with either. The RSX was no longer available, and the focus way over priced.
Although i did like driving the focus, and it had a decent little pick up to it.
Looks like i'm still in the stang for now. Hell, maybe i'll drop 3k and refinance it.

Its not that I don't have taste. I am working towards a summer goal and none of it has anything to do with hauling ass.
I think he is looking for something that is going to be more economical than what he is driving.
BTW Magnuts, I have a rsx if you are interested. :)
