View Full Version : 3rd gear woes
http://consumerist.com/368037/honda-ignores-civic-si-owners-complaints-about-faulty-transmissions
People have been complaining about this since the DC5 1st came out. I had 1 issue on my 03 DC5 where it popped out of 3rd under WOT. I was told to drain and refill the tranny, I did, and since then have been making it a habit to drain and refill the tranny case every 3rd oil change. No problems, ever. I also maintain my 08 FA5 the same way and have never had a problem with it either. I don't take away from the issues others are having, and I wish them a solution. Do any of the Si owners or DC5 owners on this forum have issues with their transmissions?

Oh yea, I remember people complaining about that back on crsx. There was a video where this guy showed it popping out of gear.

I don't have an issue with mine, and as far as I know there's never been a recall, but here's a funny story. Back in January I had an oil change and also asked for a drain/ refill of the tranny fluid. They called me right after I dropped it off and started questioning me on why I wanted my tranny drained and refilled. I had gotten it done three oil changes before that, and they thought I was trying to make them responsible for a problem with my car. lol. I started talking with the Tech, and he told me that they were running across alot of Si owners who were power shifing their cars, and then they would start developing transmission problems with the cars. I don't know how they'd know if you power shifted or not, but that's what he told me.

yep my 3rd acts funny, but never has popped out. I do the same thing pretty much with the whole tranny flushing religiously and it keeps me pretty content. As for a real solution or fix, who knows. It's been going on for so long and so many people have been demanding changes, but nothings really happened.

JESUS CHRIST ON A STICK I'm having the same type of problems. (2006 Si)
Supposedly Honda fixed the legendary K20 6 speed problem mid-2007 with redesigned syncros. Funny that this should crop up here, I was actually shopping Ebay for used 2008+ k20z3 transmissions.
I switched to Amsoil MTF fluid about 2 years ago, and recently the 2nd gear grind, hesitant 3rd and 5th...etc have started again.
There is a TSB out on how to diagnose and fix the problem. It's Honda service bulletin 08-020 dated 4-12-2008. Shoot me a message and I'll email you the .pdf.
Anyway, the solution is to completely rebuild the tranny with the updated syncro design... which is why I'm trying to find a 2008+ on off of ebay.

this kind of rings a bell, i'll have to check at work later today.
I think i read or was told about a TSB on this problem or a recall, one of the two.
It sounds really familiar though.. I believe one of the guys I work with had to fix this problem on a customer car not long after i started working at Honda.
What chenslee said about rebuilding the tranny with the new syncros sounds familiar too. Blah its gonna bug me now, ill go find the thingat work n upload it here for you guys.

I had the 3rd gear pop out a few times before Colby (chenslee) helped me trade out my trans fluid for Amsoil. Haven't had a single popout/grind issue with 3rd since. Changed it out about a year ago. I think I'm one of the lucky ones though....seen people on the 8th with worse problems.

Har. I just bought a CR-V from Mike Smith Thursday. Ask E.P about the dream I had about him.
I guess I'm just fortunate. I hate hearing about you guys issues and hope Honda can fix them soon.
