View Full Version : All Motor CRX Build Thread: pics/vids/racing

with all these elaborate build threads I figured I would make one for one of my latest projects. It has been a long time coming, as I have had to do a lot of shit to this thing to get it straight. I still need to button up a few things, but all is finally going well now. I'll see what kinda of pics I can dig up later when I have time, but for now here is a vid cranking the car. I'm hoping to tune it and get some shakedown runs later this month, time permitting.

clNPxaGAI1I

this car went 12.3@108 with a head/cams/intake stock ITR bottom end setup putting down 209 WHP, so hopefully it will get a lil bit faster with a freshened up motor and better intake/header. I might actually put the car on a diet to lighten it up 100 lb or so.

btw here is the first startup vid I made. It sounded kinda quiet and after shutting it off I noticed only the #1 and #4 injectors were plugged in LOL. I guess this motor wants to run.

the green valve cover will ultimately go on the car, but I just put one on that had the gaskets and stuff on it for now. Once we clean up and possibly repaint the green one then it will be on there.

starting to get the rex into drivable condition now. so far I need to do an alignment, decide how I ultimately want to do the radiator cap and do some other minor stuff like make an intake for it. Here's a lil vid showing the engine bay and somewhat how the car sounds:

it's a lil bit smaller motor than I had in my white teg, but this one is a wee bit higher compression and has a better intake and header.

today I got a chance to tune the car a little more. Crome Pro has autotune, and today I found out it puts way too much fuel in parts of the map lol. Took a few pics while Jamie and I were cruising around.

we run across a 240sx that was scared to run lulz

later I put some different suspension on it so it would have a better stance. Looks like I still need to lower the front a wee bit.

one thing for sure is when you have the motor out of the car be sure to clean clean clean (and even touch it up with paint if needed) the engine bay. It's a lot easier while empty.

well I got the tune pretty close on the street with a filter over the throttle body. I still need to figure out exactly how I want to do a ram air intake for it to get that extra bit of umphh while rolling out at the track. Right now datalogs show like 0.1-0.2 lb of boost on the street even with a cone filter on the throttle body. I can't wait to see what it does at the track with a ram air hehe.

yeah this is my old rex. I gave it to Jamie for him to have some all motor fun for a while. It's a wee bit faster than the stock 1.8 bottom setup LOL

Why do you lift the back of the hood like that? Cheap version of a cowl induction?

without raising the hood the engine will really smack the underside of it. and yeah it moves some air to keep the engine bay cool.

I made a custom way to control the idle on the rex so I dont have to use the throttle body base setting to control the idle. At low idle settings without an IACV, the car had a difficult time going back to idle after being run. Now it runs like a normal car hehe. If you saw what I did you would call me crazy LOL.

sorry no vids other than the ones I posted. It's impossible to get a vid while driving, and when I get Jamie to drive I am too busy trying to hold on to the laptop and pay attention to the engine's running parameters while making a pass. I guess for now this is one of those things that you got to be here at the shop to see how it does lol.

yeah I was even worried the heat from welding would melt the plastic on the IACV even with those two little tacks. Worst case scenario I would just get another IACV and use epoxy to glue something in lol. Too bad I didn't get a pic of the MNP IACV mod to use on the BMF intake manifold haha

yeah I will try my best. If we can make it, we are gonna try HRP on Friday or maybe Evadale on Saturday. Evadale is preferred, but they have a big race this weekend. Test and tune at big races is very limited.

yeah it was fun to see some action. both cars have a lot of potential, but a street tire race was like a drift competition lol. thanks man. I've put a lot of hard work in this thing. it's the same CRX I had my stock ITR bottom end in. we have got fresh paint on it, cleaned it up a lot and now it has a new motor. Jamie is supposed to have a transmission with shorter gears for it, but I haven't gotten it yet. So in the meantime I put my transmission/mounts in and made a new wiring harness to get the thing moving around.

As for spinning, I couldn't even tune it on the street on those all season street tires lol. I had to put my MH DOT street slicks on and do 3rd and 4th gear pulls to get the tune down. I want to get the tune down more at a dyno where I can see what changes in timing do to power, and I also want to finish it off at the track since I'm gonna have a ram air setup that should make some more boost hehe.

yesterday, while the internet warriors were furiously switching tabs on their browsers between redtube and the forums to see who posted what in their internet fantasy land, we decided to go to the track where real shit happens.

in true OG style we drove the car to and from the track without a trailer and proceeded to drive the living shit out of it on slicks and skinnies. I even made a pass on the all season radials, spinning them all the way down the track to run a 14 sec pass at 103 while pedaling the throttle. The car managed to pull off a few mid 12 sec passes at 108mph, and our goal was to see how it drove down the track. I left a little more pressure than normal in the slicks, and it was already cutting 1.7 60's, so I decided to leave it high like that for the day. We were wanting shakedown passes anyways just to see how the car tracks, so that was fine with me. I noticed some sort of shaking under hard acceleration on the big end of the track, so we called it a night early. Not bad for having a bunch of tools and crap in the car, full interior, and an old ass air filter covering up the throttle body lol.

Here is a vid of one of the passes:

a lil glimpse of what was going on with the timeslip. the short track was pretty crappy, with the car not even getting a 7 sec 1/8th mile ET, but it still managed to crack out a mid 12 sec pass.

oh wow was he getting some 12 sec passes out of it that day? that would be pretty awesome considering he used to run high 13's at 96 mph the last few times I was out at Evadale getting some runs in. Still no match for the stock 1.8 bottom end though hehe.

you know that back in the day when my LS hatch had an old worn out motor in it (120 compression across the board) it would run mid 16's on motor and 13.0@110 on the bottle lol. I was spraying a wee bit more than a 75 shot though. The best it ever run on motor was like a 15.1 if I remember correctly.

IMO the track is the funnest place to go play with cars. You get to run without the worries of getting pulled over or in an accident. And when it comes time to talk shit, at least the guys who go race in real races at a real racetrack have substance to back up the talk instead of vivid memories of a bunch of youtube and redtube clips:rotfl:

If it wasn't for the small possiblility of having to daily the rx7 if I sell my truck when I go to school id go ahead and pull the motor and do a bridgeport. Would be good for 220 to 240 hp depending on freshness of the motor. Just worried about drivability incase it does end up being the daily. Would be happy with just running low 13s in the future though with the bridgeport then possibly adding a small 75-100 shot. Did have a lot of fun though and we need to get more people out there for some grudge races. Maybe alvin can bring his "racecar" lols
