Preface: I'm certain I don't have the skills/knowledge/time/money to even be considering this. Despite it's obvious drawbacks this keeps bubbling closer to the top of my list of future projects.

What is unique about the way the IQ guys are doing it, is that they are taking power off the motor at the transmission's input shaft, rather than the output shaft, or the crank. There is an internal reduction gear between the crank and the input shaft. This allows them to use the Miata trans, rather than the fragile Busa trans.
